Notice: February 27, 2026 Frontenac Howe Islander Docks Rehabilitation
Howe Island County operated ferry docks rehabilitation project
The County of Frontenac received an update today (February 27, 2026) about projected ferry service interruptions related to the Howe Island County ferry docks rehabilitation project.
By way of reminders:
- The first full-closure is scheduled for this Monday, March 2 from 10 pm to Thursday March 5 at 2 pm.
- This work involves the rehabilitation of the ferry docks at both the island and mainland sides.
- Construction is scheduled to be completed by April 30, 2026.
- A mainland detour route is provided and delineated by detour signage.
- The Township three-car ferry will remain in extended operation during closures to ensure passage on and off the island.
- The island-side parking area is closed for the duration of the project to ensure the dry hydrant, boat launch, and private laneways remain unobstructed by construction activities and equipment.
The planned ferry service interruptions are:
64-hour full closures:
- March 2, 2026, from 10:00 PM to 2:00 PM, March 5, 2026
- March 9, 2026, from 10:00 PM to 2:00 PM, March 12, 2026
- April 6, 2026, from 10:00 PM to 2:00 PM, April 9, 2026
- April 13, 2026, from 10:00 PM to 2:00 PM, April 16, 2026
The contractor has set aside 64 hours for each full closure to include time to adapt to weather events or other unforeseen circumstances. If work concludes early, service will resume early.
As always, unforeseen circumstances may necessitate changes to this schedule. A further full closure subsequent to the one already scheduled for April 13 may be required to complete the work. We will keep you apprised of any new developments as soon as they emerge.
This is a coordinated effort among MTO, contractor, Township, and County staff. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
