Emergency Preparedness
Emergencies can happen at anytime and occur anywhere, sometimes without much warning. An emergency can force you to evacuate your neighbourhood or confine you to your home or workplace. It can leave you without basic services such as water, gas, electricity or a working telephone. Are you prepared?
Although Ontario has effective emergency management legislation and programs, individuals and families play a vital role in preparing for times of crisis when emergency services and other government resources may be strained. It is important that individuals and families prepare to take care of themselves for at least three days.
Individuals and families are best able to cope when they have taken the time to prepare before an emergency happens.

Frontenac Islands Fire Prevention
Is it time to change your clock? Then its also time to change the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors! The Frontenac Islands Fire Service recommend residents replace the old batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when they change their clocks.
For smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to do their job, they need to have working batteries. When residents change their clocks, old batteries should be replaced with new batteries and all detectors should be tested.
To survive a fire, you need an early warning signal and the knowledge of what to do when the smoke detector sound. It's the law in Ontario to have working smoke detectors on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, it is recommended to also install alarms inside all bedrooms.
Tampering with or removing the batteries from your smoke detectors is against the law. Failure to comply with the Ontario Fire Code smoke detector requirements can result in a fine of up to $50,000.
The Frontenac Islands Fire Service highly recommends that homeowners have working carbon monoxide detectors in their homes, especially outside the sleeping areas.
