Update on Wolfe Island Ferry Service
Kingston, Ontario - The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) continues to manage and monitor ferry operations between Kingston and Wolfe Island, recognizing the essential role this service plays in connecting residents, businesses, and visitors with the mainland.
Recent service disruptions have occurred as a result of mechanical and power-related issues affecting the Wolfe Islander IV. These challenges have resulted in periodic interruptions to regular sailings, including a temporary out of service of the vessel between December 22 - December 24, 2025, due to an electrical issue. MTO has advised that service restoration is expected as soon as conditions permit, and repairs are completed.
As an interim measure, MTO has deployed the Quinte Loyalist to provide walk-on passenger service between Marysville Dock on Wolfe Island and Crawford Wharf in Kingston, with departures approximately every 45 minutes.
In addition, MTO has mobilized the Frontenac II as a temporary replacement vessel to transport vehicles and passengers. The Frontenac II is expected to arrive later this afternoon. Prior to being placed into service, regulatory requirements mandate that the vessel and docking facilities undergo inspections and testing to ensure safe operation. Any necessary equipment modifications will be completed, if feasible, before service begins.
MTO continues to work to resolve the electrical issue affecting the Wolfe Islander IV and to enhance overall operational reliability. This includes ongoing maintenance of vessel systems, associated infrastructure, and continued commissioning of shore-based systems to support the ferry’s hybrid electric capabilities once fully completed.
The Township of Frontenac Islands remains in regular communication with MTO and will share updates as confirmed information becomes available. Residents and travellers are encouraged to monitor official MTO ferry service advisories and Township communications for the most current information.
The Ministry acknowledges the significant importance of ferry service to the Wolfe Island community and thanks residents and users for their patience and understanding as these operational matters are addressed.
